"Would you... Wash your hair and brush your teeth with brake fluid, engine degreaser or anti-freeze? Well you probably are and don't know it."

The reason it is used in personal care products is because Propylene Glycol serves as a Humectant, which is a substance that helps retain moisture.  It therefore makes the skin feel moist and soft and the products do not dry out.  The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for Propylene Glycol state that this chemical is implicated in contact dermatitis, kidney damage and liver abnormalities.  It can inhibit cell growth in human tests and can damage cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin and surface damage.  The acute effects of exposure to Propylene Glycol as listed on the MSDS states that it may be harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorbtion.  

Exposure may also cause eye irritation, skin irritiation, gastro-intestinal disturbances, nausea, headache and vomiting, and Central Nervous System depression.  The name of another one of these chemicals is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).  SLS is a harsh (caustic) detergent.  It is used as a surfactant, which breaks down the surface tension of water.  The uses of SLS include concrete floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car wash detergents, and personal care products including probably every major brand of toothpaste you can find.  SLS is also a mutagen.  Which means that it is capable of changing the genetic material found in the cells. 

 It is routinely used in clinical studies as the control skin irritant.  It enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain from skin contact. It denatures proteins and impairs the proper structural formation of young eyes causing permanent damage.   SLS can also damage the immune system.  Along with separation of skin layers and inflammation to the skin. Yet this chemical is probably applied to your skin every single day.
